Ninety-seven years ago, 14 deacons from local
Reformed and Christian Reformed Churches gathered in Paterson, NJ
to discuss the state of treatment for the mentally ill. The men were
disheartened by the appalling conditions of asylums and other facilities
that housed such individuals. The group left the meeting with a commitment
to build a hospital that would provide physical, mental, and spiritual
care for the mentally ill. From one small 17-bed psychiatric hospital
in a renovated farmhouse on 10 acres, Christian Health Care Center
(CHCC) has today evolved to include a broad spectrum of mental-health
and elder-care services with 12 expansive buildings on 78 acres. Today,
CHCC offers the following mental-health services:
Ramapo
Ridge Psychiatric Hospital provides a full range of treatment
programs for adults and geriatric patients.
Ramapo Ridge Partial Program provides short-term treatment to
assist in the decrease of acute psychiatric symptoms and in the
development of coping skills needed for community living.
Christian
Health Care Counseling Center offers professional licensed staff
to provide counseling to families and individuals of all ages.
Pathways
is a partial-hospitalization program treating the needs of adults
who experience both a developmental disability and a co-existing
psychiatric disorder.
